Happy Father’s Day
The idea for creating a day for children to honor their father’s began in Spokane, Washington. A woman by the name of Sonora Smart Dodd thought of the idea for Father’s Day while listening to a Mother’s Day sermon in 1909. Having been raised by her father, William Smart, after her mother died, Sonora wanted her father to know how special he was to her. It was her father that made all the parental sacrifices and was, in the eyes of his daughter, a courageous, selfless, and loving man. Sonora’s father was born in June, so she chose to hold the first Father’s Day celebration in Spokane, Washington on June 19, 1910. In 1926, a National Father’s Day Committee was formed in New York City. Father’s Day was recognized by a Joint Resolution of Congress in 1956. In 1972, President Richard Nixon established a permanent national observance of Father’s Day to be held on the third Sunday of June. So Father’s Day was born in memory and gratitude by a daughter who thought that her father and all good fathers should be honored with a special day just like we honor our mother’s on Mother’s Day. If you have had the blessing of a good father, be sure and use today to express to him the gratitude, love, and appreciation for all that he has done for you throughout your life.
What a great and exciting week of VBS we experienced this past week! It is so encouraging to see so many children and young people with that joy of singing and learning about Jesus. It was also very nourishing spiritually to hear the word taught by Brother Dale Jenkins in the adult class. An average of more than 125 were here each evening. Thanks to each of you for your participation, and thank you to each one who helped in so many ways to make this a great VBS. A great team effort truly took place. God was glorified and lives were truly blessed.
As you go forth this week remember all our missionaries in prayer, but especially Jordan Camp as she serves this week in Nicaragua and then in Honduras for a few more weeks before returning back to us on July 11. Also remember Brittnea and Ale as they settle back into the work of the Lord in Asuncion, Paraguay.
We continue to rejoice with Cindy Greear and Dot Comer as they both responded to the Lord’s invitation last Sunday for the Lord’s strength and help in dealing with and conquering struggles in their lives. Pray for each of these sisters daily and encourage them as you have opportunity.
Through each day of the week before us, keep on focusing on heaven remembering that “you died, and your life is hidden with Christ in God.” (Col. 3:3) For all fathers among us, have a very Happy Father’s Day. God bless you. I love you.
Kevin
