The New Testament speaks quite often of the importance of “holding fast.” Consider the following calls to “hold fast” and what this holding fast means for us.

“by which also you are saved, if you hold fast that word which I preached to you – …” (1 Cor. 15:2) This means that we continue believing the gospel message we have received (1 Cor. 15:1) and obeyed.

“Test all things; hold fast what is good.” (1 Thess. 5:21) This means to give yourself to holding on to what is good by doing what is good and therefore keeping evil out of your life.

“Hold fast the pattern of sound words which you have heard from me, in faith and love which are in Christ Jesus.” (2 Tim. 1:13) Paul give Timothy true words from God that he reminded Timothy of here. Likewise, holding fast to these true words of inspiration means for us to believe them and put them into practice in our lives.

“… whose house we are if we hold fast the confidence and the rejoicing of the hope firm to the end.” (Heb. 3:6) This means we will be speaking of the joy of the hope we have in the Lord.

“Let us hold fast the confession of our hope without wavering, …” (Heb. 10:23) This means we tell others at every opportunity about the confident expectation of heaven that we have in Christ Jesus.

May we all commit to give ourselves to “holding fast” in these ways that we are called to do so that we may be the children of God He has called us to be. As you go forth through this week, remember to talk and pray about being a family focused on faithfully following the Father. God bless you. I love you.

Tonight we’ll be studying about an “Introduction to Who God Is” from Paul’s sermon in Athens recorded in Acts 17:22-31. Athens was one of the greatest ancient cities, but it was also a city full of idolatry. (Acts 17:16) Paul reasons with the Jews and Gentiles who worshipped God in the synagogue along with those in the marketplace as well regarding Jesus the Christ. (Acts 17:17) The Epicurean and Stoic philosophers began to question Paul. (Acts 17:18-21) The Epicureans chief aim in life was pleasure. They believed they could find happiness by seeking that which brought physical and mental pleasure. In contrast to the Epicureans, Paul believed that true happiness was found in following the will of Jesus Christ. Stoics believed that human beings should be free from passion and unmoved by joy or grief. They also believed in being submissive to natural law, calmly accepting all things as a result of God’s divine will.

Join us in worship this evening as we learn about who God is as Paul preached in Athens. Tonight will be the beginning of a series of messages from God’s word that I’ll be sharing with you concerning “Basic Bible Doctrines” that, Lord willing, we’ll study together during the next few months on Sunday evenings. As you go through the week ahead, remember to daily keep your family focused on faithfully following the Father. God bless you. I love you.

As you go forth throughout this week, strive to put on the newness as children of God that Paul spoke of in the following verses. “Therefore, as the elect of God, holy and beloved, put on tender mercies, kindness, humility, meekness, longsuffering; bearing with one another, and forgiving one another, if anyone has a complaint against another; even as Christ forgave you, so you also must do. But above all these things put on love, which is the bond of perfection. And let the peace of God rule in your hearts, to which also you were called in one body; and be thankful. (Colossians 3:12-15) And also remember to give yourself to leading your family to staying focused on faithfully following the Father daily. God bless you. I love you.

With the beginning of this year, I am reminded how a new year brings with it new opportunities. We each have 365 days of 2012 before us. How will we use these 365 days of 2012? Tonight I want to share with you some opportunities before each of us for the year ahead as we worship God together. Let us all encourage each other by being together in worship to God this evening. Our theme for this year is “Families Focused on Faithfully Following the Father.” This morning’s message from God’s word will remind us each to have the proper foundation so that we will be ready to lead our families in being and staying focused on faithfully following the Father. And next Sunday evening we will be starting Pew Packers before the evening service at 5:30 for our families to pack the pews together with exciting ways to encourage our children in learning God’s will for their lives. Make plans now for 5:30 each Sunday evening to be in Pew Packers to help your family be focused on faithfully following the Father together and then be together as a family in continued worship with the church at 6:00 p.m. God bless you. I love you.

The holiday season is so much fun with families getting together to enjoy sharing with each other and reminiscing. As the spirit of Christmas is all around us today, the joy of giving also abounds. Giving so much to make sure everyone has a joyous Christmas is fun. Church, school, and civic groups have all shared in the spirit of giving again this year at Christmas. Close to 50 gathered together this past Tuesday evening to visit with and sing Christmas carols for our older members while sharing with them a gift basket as well. It truly is fun to experience the joys of giving and sharing with others along with spending time with the ones you love most.

As you experience the joys of being with family and giving to others through the Christmas season, please remember God’s gift to you as well. “For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life.” (John 3:16) We do not know exactly when Jesus was born, but I cannot help but praise God this day as I strive to do every day for the miraculous birth and gift of His Son. As Luke recorded in his gospel account, may we join the heavenly host praising God now and always. “And suddenly there was with the angel a multitude of heavenly host praising God and saying, ‘Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace, goodwill toward men!’” (Luke 2:13-14)

May the joys of the holidays include not only the joys of being with family and giving to others. May it also include the joy of Jesus in your life shown forth by praise to God for sending Him as a gift to provide for your salvation. Keep striving to focus on heaven each day of this week as 2011 draws to a close remembering that “… you died, and your life is hidden with Christ in God. When Christ who is our life appears, then you also will appear with Him in glory.” (Colossians 3:3-4) God bless you. I love you.

I want to continue to commend you as a congregation of God’s people. The response to the helping of families in need has gone great again this year. Thank you for the great response last Sunday to the other local family we were made aware of that needed help. All of the presents for these four families will be delivered this week to make their Christmas a Merry and Joyful time. What a joy we will all have this Tuesday evening in singing Christmas carols in the homes of so many of our older members to wish them a very Merry Christmas! Thank you for sharing your time to encourage others during this time of year in so many ways. And don’t forget that Santa Claus will be here for all of our small children to see and talk with tonight after worship.

Without a doubt, you have experienced the words of Jesus this holiday season by your actions of sharing with others as He said, “It is more blessed to give than receive.” (Acts 20:35) Brothers and sisters, as Paul said of the Philippians, so I say to you, “I thank my God upon my every remembrance of you, always in every prayer of mine making request for you all with joy.” (Philippians 1:3-4)

I hope and pray for each of you and your families a very happy holiday season these next two weeks with a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year. Through it all remember to close out 2011 continuing to focus on heaven daily by setting your mind on things above, not on things of the earth. (Col. 3:2) God bless you. I love you.

Trust in the LORD with all your heart, And lean not on your own understanding; In all your ways acknowledge Him, And He shall direct your paths. Proverbs 3:5-6

Be anxious for nothing, but in everything by prayer and supplication, with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God; and the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus. Philippians 4:6-7

Trust in the LORD forever, For in Yah, the LORD, is everlasting strength. But those who wait on the LORD Shall renew their strength; They shall mount up with wings like eagles, They shall run and not be weary, They shall walk and not faint. Isaiah 26:4; 40:31

He only is my rock and my salvation; He is my defense; I shall not be moved. In God is my salvation and my glory; The rock of my strength, And my refuge, is in God. Trust in Him at all times, you people; Pour out your heart before Him; God is a refuge for us. Psalm 62:6-8

Therefore humble yourselves under the mighty hand of God, that He may exalt you in due time, casting all your care upon Him, for He cares for you. 1 Peter 5:6-7
